New research reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
